Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
